Years ago, Lixin observed in a grade 2 class in Edmonton. When it was time for math, all children, without being asked, put down their colored markers and picked up the black one. This disappearance of colors was intriguing. It gave the impression that math is uncreative and impersonal.

Having taught math in public schools and researched math education in a PhD program, Lixin has come to appreciate the creative and human aspects in math and education. Like Whitehead, she has become wary of education in which knowledge is not alive. There are colorful alternatives to a monochromatic image of education. Lixin wants to help education become more playful, humane, and inspiring for both students and teachers. Through her work in EFSS, Lixin hopes to facilitate a learning journey in which all parties become more resourceful and compassionate by utilizing the resources at hand, adapting to changes, and connecting to nature and others.

Lixin grew up in China during an era with few toys, digital distractions, and extra-curricular activities. She enjoyed a childhood full of free outdoor play. Her immigration to Canada decades ago allows her to learn from diverse cultures and lands. Lixin’s current playground includes writing experimental children’s stories and tutoring math.
